报告摘要：

In this expository talk, we formalize and review an intriguing statistical phenomenon that a few sparse signals (cranes) can be separated from certain low-rank or dense signals (a flock of chickens). We present specific examples of the general phenomenon, ranging from image processing, robust PCA, covariance estimation, and graphical models to compositional data and causal inference. In particular, we connect the idea to the challenging problem of multiple causal inference and highlight the role of the underlying sparse and dense decomposition in identifying causal effects with unmeasured confounding.

主讲人简介：

林伟，北京大学数学科学学院、统计科学中心助理教授、研究员。2011年在美国南加州大学获应用数学博士，2011至2014年在美国宾夕法尼亚大学做博士后。主要研究方向为高维统计和统计机器学习，此外还包括成分数据、因果推断、生存分析，以及在基因组学、宏基因组学和环境科学中的应用。在统计学及相关领域顶级期刊Journal of the American Statistical Association、Biometrika、Biometrics、IEEE Transactions on Information Theory、Operations Research、《中国科学：数学》等发表论文多篇。兼任北京智源人工智能DB视讯(中国)智源研究员，主持国家重点研发计划课题、国家自然科学基金面上项目、北京市自然科学基金重点研究专题项目等。
